Introduction to AICE Media Studies

  


 My name is Vanessa Scholey and I am currently in Fort Lauderdale High School in the 10th grade. I love to read books and have a pretty extensive library at home. Some of my favorite authors are HDA Roberts, Rick Riordan, Helen Gosney, and Kel Kade. My idea of a perfect day is sitting on the porch, reading a book with a blanket and a warm drink.

    I also really enjoy political and social debate, especially on topics I am particularly passionate about. I don't have much official debate experience but I hope to include this interest in my future career path in some way. I think equality, education, and the environment are some of the most important issues of our time. My biggest flaws are probably that I have very high expectations of myself and the people around me, I sometimes find it difficult to motivate myself, and I often say stuff without thinking about it. 

    One of my greatest fears is ending up spending the rest of my life doing a job I hate. Currently, I plan to study some form of law and business at University but I'm not sure if I'll enjoy the field. I'm planning to explore internship, work, and volunteer opportunities post-quarantine to get a better understanding of my interests. I don't want to stay in Florida for my college education and I'm looking at options abroad and in other US states. The idea of international school in foreign speaking countries really appeals to me. So far, I like McGill University in Montreal, Canada and I would love to explore schools in the Netherlands.   

    In the future, I hope my career will allow me to travel, work remotely, and live a fulfilling life doing what makes me happy. Traveling with friends is one of my biggest bucket list items, especially if we could do it indefinitely. I would love to visit the Swiss Alps, Japan, Iceland, Wales, and South Africa, among other places. I would love to live outside of the United States at some point in my life and I hope to find a beautiful place to buy a home and retire. 

    I am taking this class because I strongly believe that media is a powerful influence on every part of society everywhere in the world, and will continue to be in the future. With any force as deeply embedded in life as media, I believe that everyone, including me, should have at least a general understanding of how and what the process of producing media entails. I also need another AICE credit and this class looked interesting.

This project will probably be one of my favorites from this class. This ended up being a very personal project and a refection on one of my life experiences. Because I filmed the project in my persepctive, it gave me a chance to review what I found most interesting and what I actually spent most of time looking at or experiencing throughout my day. Choosing what memories I wanted to share and how I wanted them to be perceived was actually a very interesting process. This project was a progression of my journey. CCR Question 2: Navier

How does your final task represent social groups or issues)? My final tasks feature a female heroine. In doing this, I hope not only to represent a gender, but also to break several preconceived notions. For example, Navier, my protagonist, is a skilled fighter and talented combatant with a silver tongue; however, I also hope to establish that she is also someone who also enjoys things that fit into a typically feminine stereotype; something that has recently become something for girls to be shamed for liking. Navier can kick a bad guy’s butt in a ball gown and prefers if her knives have pink handles. By implementing aspects of femininity into a role that would be usually masculine, I hope to encourage little girls to be whatever and whoever they want, without having to worry about roles or stereotypes. Filming Blog: Music Video

My filming process began Saturday, November 21. This was the first day of the Thanksgiving break and the day that my family and I began our road trip to North Carolina. I chose to film during this time because of the timing of my prior blogs and due to practicality. I was hesitant at first with this process because the footage I had filmed was so wildly different from the contents of M.I.A.'s Paper Plane music video. I was concerned that the difference would cause some issues in how the song was intended to be portrayed. I showed a very different side of the Paper Plane's message by contrasting the lyrics with the images to add emphasis which I hope showed a more personal representation and interpretation. Still, my concerns remain and I may change my song choice in the editing part to fit my scenes better. My footage has scenes from the beginning of my journey all the way to the end.
