Media Studies Commercial
Let
me just say, I am quite proud of my final commercial. This project
involved some very unfamiliar processes which meant a lot of effort went
into the work. I was surprised at how smoothly every step went,
something I didn't think would happen. However, if I could do it again I
would definitely try to use more professional angles and lightning. I would also be very interested in shooting a video for an object that would better suit a product-focused commercial. The project I did about an injection medicine, which I based off real examples, never even showed the product in the commercial because of the negative associations with its appearance.
My least favorite part of this project is the
level of supervision in regards to what counted as a grade and what had
to be turned in. I enjoy doing thing at
my own pace, my own way. That meant that even if having exact steps
outlined may have helped us understand the task, it also caused me to
delay certain portions of the project I probably wouldn't have
otherwise. This meant steps like drawing the storyboard as part of the planning
process were detrimentally pushed off because of their form. I struggle with 'extra' steps like
this which force me to stop my rhythm by requiring me to do something I
am neither good at or enjoy.
But honestly, this commercial work as a whole isn't my favorite type of project. I do enjoy the scripting and planning process but other steps, editing, in particular, are just parts of the process I rather leave to a partner or group mate. Steps that involve specific, unfamiliar technological programs often result in me spending a lot of time figuring out how to use the program. It can also lead to intense frustration when things don't work out how you wanted and/or footage gets deleted or damaged due to misuse.
I've learned that the creative part of the process is what I enjoy the most. The writing, planning, and scripting portions are where I thrive and the development steps are not were my efforts are best suited. I look forward to having a similar project but assigned as group work so that everyone can do what they are good at and what they enjoy. I've also learned that things don't always go as planned even if you think you've accounted for everything. Sometimes thins spring up that force you to think on your feet and that it's okay if you have to improvise as long as you don't panic.
