Genre Research: Horror

The task for this project was to chose a genre and research typical conventions of the filming of the genre. This included common lighting, angles, sounds, movement, and elements. I chose to research horror. I thought that horror would have a very strict and clear style as most horror films are recorded in a similar manner and follow the same general storyline. The distrion of the gener, as well as the long history behind it, made me intrested. Humans enjoy being afriad so much that they create scenes depicting horrrible brutatilry and terrible fears for amusement. It was an intresting concept and I thought that the process behind it would be intresting. What I've discovered it that they're is a lot of overlap in filming style in horror. The vast majority of movies in this genre use spefcifc lighting styles to convay the darker tone that most of the footage demands. Low-key lightening is one such example as it uses harsh light and dramatic shadows to get the creepy effect you can find so often in horror. There is also the icon upligheing where a birght light is placed inder an object to illuminate it. Classically this would be putting a flashlight under your chin while telling a scary story as a campfire. Angles tend to include positons of weakness, vulnerability and naivity. Often times the audience will be able to see something the character might not or be able to see emotion in intense detail. Costumes and makeup can often be very extreme, as blood, makeup and special affects are made using props. Iconic examples of horror films with strong consmetics would by IT and One Missed Call. The core of every horror film is fundementally the same. The vitim(s) are being terrorized and killed off by the murder or monster that is after them. The locations of the scene tend to be rural, abaonded, or unpopulated. The story focuses on terror and the basic instinct to survive which usualy involved fleeing, chasing, and then a massacare.
