Genre Research: Mr. Right
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
The characters attitudes in the face of danger was nonchalant and humours which I genuinely found entertaining. The main characters' relationship was shallow, but intense which I think could be interesting to include in my final task. I want to make the character in my opening sequence both funny and badass so that I can bring to life one of my favorite genres. I think the cheesiness of this film was overdone, but I do appreciate certain aspect of the slightly ridiculous humor that I think could be fun to include. The action scenes in Mr. Right weren't what I usually enjoy but the dynamic between the male and female lead during these scenes is something I hope to convey in my footage.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I though that there was some charming moments that made the film enjoyable to watch. It wasn't a high quality production but it was funny and the humor was spot on. The action sequences are a little choppy, but the humorous scenes rarely fail to get a laugh. I would classify it as a a bloody take on a rom-com film and, in my mind, it just over the top enough to enjoy it. The extavagance of the characters personalities was something I loved. This film was a nice distraction from complicated plots and mysteries. You could focus truly on the comedic take on violence and romance without having to worry about who or why. The lack of objectification, something you can usually find a lot in action movies, was also something I appreciated.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
The film comes off as written by an amature. The development of the characters was limited and it played on the savior complex that is often found between male and female characters in action movies. There is little substance to the storyline and there is never a moment of unity between the cute romance and the bloody killings. In general, the story is tacky and very light on moral implications. The performance of the actors are good but the chaos of the film feeling shallow. The film has no logic and minimal genuine emotion to the extent that it can be considered all about the uniqueness and insanity of the characters. It can comes off as a half-baked mix of clichés.
