Genre Research: Romance & Comedy

DRAMA: Common CAMS in the genre Some of the most used examples of CAMS in romance films are Establishing Shots, typically used to help viewers determine the setting of the scene. Hollywood, Paris, Greece, and New York are common settings with iconic monuments often used for establishing shots. Mid Shot is another good example. These shots work well in showing body langauge; telling us how the character fells without them having to speak. Closeups are also often used as they are usually a good shot to make the audience feel empathy towards the character. Common CLAMPS in the genre costumes in romance films tend to be fairly standard street wear as the characters are usually intended to be easy to relate to. Makeup is also nondescript. Actors tend to be good looking and charming individuals with natural props that exist in daily life. Scenes will usually be in familiar locations with natural lighting. Common Editing in your genre An eyeline match is a good example of a common editing technique in romance films. This editing is used when viewers want to see what on-screen characters are seeing, like when a character is looking at an off-screen object or person, the following shot will be of that object. Example films of your genres Some classic examples of romantic dramas are the Titanic, The Bridges of Madison County Casablanca, Coming Home, Memoirs of a Geisha, Last Tango in Paris, and Water for Elephants. All of these films are iconic for they're sappy love stories and beautiful romances. Common sound in your genre You will hear both digetic and nondigetic sounds in romance films as many scene have both dialogue and background music. What elements of the genre that you like? Romance films typically portray the journey that their couple in their relationship and through some misunderstandings and fights. I enjoy the progress of the relationships and the happy ending that many of these films have. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you? Romance films tend to play on a traditional male/female power dynamic resulting in the woman being in a submissive position in life and in the relationship. Often times, the woman is ment to 'fix' the man with the 'power of love' at the expense of her own happiness and wellbeing. I don't enjoy the toxicity of many of the relationship shown in these films. COMEDY: Common CAMS in the genre The quick zoom is a iconic CAMS technique found in many comedy movies. It creates a high energy shot and usually focuses on an amusing expression or detail that would have been missed in a wider picture. Close ups are also used as more emotion can be recognized by viewers. Common CLAMPS in the genre Comedy tends to reflect real life so clothing is usually standard street wear and classic makeup. This; however, can change depending on the style of film and the scene. Commonly, lightning is natural and setting are places you can find in real life. Actors tend to be very dramatic and have dynamic expressions. Common Editing in your genre Cross cuts are common in comedy films particular when there are several main characters. This is to help the storyline progress in a clear manner that allows the audience to be aware of what is happening and why the characters take the actions they do. Example films of your genres Clueless, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ghostbusters, Home Alone, and Pee-wee's Big Adventure are some timeless classic in the comedy genre. Common sound in your genre Dialogue is key in comedy films as many times jokes are conveyed between characters. You will also often here funny sound effects and background audio to add to the atmosphere of the scene. What elements of the genre that you like? I enjoy the humor and lightheartedness of storyline and how easy it is to laugh along with the characters in the story. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you? I usually don't enjoy all of the humor and sometimes comedy films have a boring plotline despite the humor incorporated.
