CCR Question 2: Navier
How does your final task represent social groups or issues)?
My final tasks feature a female heroine. In doing this, I hope not only to represent a gender, but also to break several preconceived notions. For example, Navier, my protagonist, is a skilled fighter and talented combatant with a silver tongue; however, I also hope to establish that she is also someone who also enjoys things that fit into a typically feminine stereotype; something that has recently become something for girls to be shamed for liking. Navier can kick a bad guy’s butt in a ball gown and prefers if her knives have pink handles. By implementing aspects of femininity into a role that would be usually masculine, I hope to encourage little girls to be whatever and whoever they want, without having to worry about roles or stereotypes. As a result of Navier’s powers and past, I also hope to establish that her humor and personality was born after enduring intense trauma and suffering severely from PTSD and depression. While it was difficult to make clear in my final task, the casual nature in which Navier handles her own frequent deaths is not something that can be easily born and is not something that can be accomplished by the weak minded. Navier’s powers not only prevent her from being killed but prevent her from dying in general. She has outlived many close friends and family and this has resulted in a somewhat apathetic, antisocial personality that prevents her from getting close to people. My goal is to accurately reflect these mental health issues to shed some light on the illness and to help people break their biases of these conditions. Though it is not established in my final task, I would love to make the romantic interest of Navier female. Representation of lesbian couples is almost nonexistent in large scale productions. Having a female love interest in an action film about a female hero is something that could help shed light on the LGBTQ+ community, and increase the shortly lacking representation of sexual minorities. I would also enjoy having background characters have diverse ethnic backgrounds. Not only do I think this would make the film more interesting but it would also increase the depth of the story. I would love for people to be able to connect with my characters, especially when racial, religious, and gender representation is extremely limited in media.
