Filming Blog: Backup Plan [Humira]

The actors of the commercial the night of the shoot [10/31/20] fully dressed in their Halloween costumes.

Our filming began on Saturday, October 31st, and ended on Sunday, November 1st. I changed everything about my commercial since the planning period. Not only did the scenes change, but the actors also were not who I had planned to cast in the original blueprint. I directed and recorded the commercial as I initially wanted, but to accommodate my new circumstances I improvised quite a bit and many of my shots were candid and natural. Despite the unstaged scenes, I made sure to vary my angles and shots and to fit every shot to the theme of the commercial. Most of the props were found in and around the immediate area, except the food which was ordered from a local fast-food chain.

My first scene was one where the main actor, the patient suffering from Crohn's disease, was in pain from her ailment. My actors ending up being my six closest friends, all female, which resulted in a change to the whole plot. I switched from a family-themed commercial to a friendship revolving commercial. Still, the basic concepts were the same - someone who is suffering from their ailment would recover after taking Humira. In my commercial, I used mostly POV shots from mid angles, some panning shots as well as some full shots.

The very first video I recorded was a laughing candid in a bedroom. It only contained 4 members of the 5 total actors. Then I filmed a scene of all 5 actors listening to music and doing makeup in the bathroom. After that, I filmed two scenes in a grocery store. I will probably only use one of these shots because of time constraints and content quality. Then I recorded a meal scene with actors laughing and talking. The last scene I shot was the scene depicting the patient in pain, which is the firsts scene of my commercial. Using the footage from these 5 scenes, I will have the entirety of my commercial. I did record other scenes but to create a clear progression of events I chose connected scenes.

After I recorded the visual part of my commercial, I recorded the audio of my commercial. The reason these are separate is due to the fact that I plan on doing a voice-over rather than use the diegetic sound in the recordings. I believe this will better fit the style of the brand and industry in regards to a commercial structure. I wrote the script before filming and will be using my own voice and the voice of one other person to record the audio for the voice over.
