Filming Blog: Music Video

Image
My filming process began Saturday, November 21. This was the first day of the Thanksgiving break and the day that my family and I began our road trip to North Carolina. I chose to film during this time because of the timing of my prior blogs and due to practicality. I was hesitant at first with this process because the footage I had filmed was so wildly different from the contents of M.I.A.'s Paper Plane music video. I was concerned that the difference would cause some issues in how the song was intended to be portrayed. I showed a very different side of the Paper Plane's message by contrasting the lyrics with the images to add emphasis which I hope showed a more personal representation and interpretation. Still, my concerns remain and I may change my song choice in the editing part to fit my scenes better. My footage has scenes from the beginning of my journey all the way to the end. Clips of packing the car, time spent on the road, stops along the way, and detours were all...

Planning Storyboard For My Music Video

Image
Scene one will likely contain several actors loading a car in preparation for a road trip. Two dogs will also be included. I will be filming in full shot and POV and it will occur in my driveway. In the second scene, I will film a scene of the car driving or a shot of the road from inside of the car. This scene will be shot in POV or over the shoulder angles. In scene three, I will film actors in the car singing along to the song and dancing in their seats. This scene will be shot in POV and mid-length angles. The first stop we make will be the fourth scene. Most likely this will be at a gas station or rest stop and I will record actors stretching or going inside the store. This scene will be a POV shot. At the same location as scene four or another stop we make, I will film scene five walking the dogs, most likely with the younger actors. This will also be a POV shot. Then I will record our arrival at the hotel for scene six. This will serve as a break from the moving scene. POV w...

Planning For My Music Video

Image
I plan on shooting this music video over the Thanksgiving break. This is mostly due to the time allowance. The week long break will allow me to get a lot of footage to use in my video. initially, when I choose this song and learned what it was about, I wanted to stay as closely to the intended aesthetic of the music video. However, I will be traveling with my family during this time which requires me to deviate from my inital concepts for this video. My family and I will be driving up to North Carolina to visit a friend. My parents, sisters and dogs don't really match the characters and persona that M.I.A. built in her video so I probably can't replicate it like I planned. Therefore, I plan on going the exact opposite direction. Paper Planes is about harmful and false stereotypes about immigrants in America. M.I.A. used her music video to exaggerate these conceptions to bring awareness about the hypocrisy of people's judgement. In my music video, I hope to correct people...

Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
Airplanes by M.I.A. is a typical electronic dance song from the late 2000. The songs in this genre typically involve a variety of scenes including dancing, lipsynching, and other fast passed action shots. The existing music video for this song starts with short scenes of a major city. These are all clips of infrastructure and random walking individuals. Then the singer comes begins singing the song and dancing in various locations. Her lipsynching is broken up by various candid scenes featuring the singer. One example includes her working in a fast-food truck and serving a customer. The entire music video continues in much the same fashion. Clips on lipsyncing, shopping, dancing, city shots, and working at the food truck continue to appear to continue throughout the video. This video is was published in 2009 and uses outdated filming styles, fashion styles, dancing styles, and even content styles. It is very different then modern music videos which use high definition cameras and mode...

Introduction to the Music Video Project

Image
For this project, I plan on working by myself. I chose to do this so that I would not have to correspond and plan with other individuals. I tend to travel around this time of year and to prevent problems with that, working by myself makes sense. I also have a clear understanding of my own abilities so I know what areas to spend more time on and what areas I can do easily. Another reason is that I don't want to have to worry about teammates following through on their parts. Sometimes even the nicest people can be bad teammates in a group project. Due to COVID-19 and the quarantine which prevents us from going to school, I don't know any of my classmates very well and so to solve the problem of bad groupmates, I plan on avoiding them altogether. It also allows me to work at my own pace without worrying about who has to do what. I had a hard time choosing a song so I decided to ask some of my friends to choose from a list of seven of my favorite songs. I made sure that they kn...

CPR: Commercial Project [Humira]

Image
The product featured in my commercial is Humira, an immunosuppressant used to treat a variety of ailment, including Crohn's disease. Medically relevant topics are a kind of taboo among some people. Some individuals can feel uncomfortable with topics involving disorders, disabilities, diseases, infections and other various conditions. Some even feel uncomfortable talking about treatment. In this sense, a commercial for a medical treatment, even one that can help a lot of people, can be frowned upon. In this regard, challenging convention and comfort zones is a big part of getting information about Humira out to the public. Both the diseases this drug treats and the medication itself is not limited to any singular group or groups. Humira crosses racial, gender, and age lines and was made to save lives. The only thing that would prevent you from using Humira to treat a relevant disease would be preexisting conditions like infections or pregnancy.  It can also help raise awarene...

Media Studies Commercial

Image
Let me just say, I am quite proud of my final commercial. This project involved some very unfamiliar processes which meant a lot of effort went into the work. I was surprised at how smoothly every step went, something I didn't think would happen. However, if I could do it again I would definitely try to use more professional angles and lightning. I would also be very interested in shooting a video for an object that would better suit a product-focused commercial. The project I did about an injection medicine, which I based off real examples, never even showed the product in the commercial because of the negative associations with its appearance.   My least favorite part of this project is the level of supervision in regards to what counted as a grade and what had to be turned in. I enjoy doing thing at my own pace, my own way. That meant that even if having exact steps outlined may have helped us understand the task, it also caused me to delay ...

Editing Blog: Picking Shots [Humira]

Image
One of the actors posing for a photo during the grocery store scene. When I shot scenes, it was not in order of how I plan on placing them in the editing portion, but it was with a clear story line in mind. I also did not film with specific scene plans due to the fact that I had to use my backup plan. This meant that during editing I had quite a bit of footage and I know had to pick where and how to use it. I shot most of my scenes without even knowing if I would use them, only that they fit the theme of my commercial. By the end of my recording time I had surpassed 30 seconds of content, the length of the commercial. At this point I knew I had to decide what footage I was going to use and I did, which I then described in my filming blog. I finished the editing fairly quickly, the short duration of the video meant less footage, so I only spent about an hour actually making it. What took the most time was what order to put them in and what additional edits I wanted to make wi...

Filming Blog: Backup Plan [Humira]

Image
The actors of the commercial the night of the shoot [10/31/20] fully dressed in their Halloween costumes. Our filming began on Saturday, October 31st, and ended on Sunday, November 1st. I changed everything about my commercial since the planning period. Not only did the scenes change, but the actors also were not who I had planned to cast in the original blueprint. I directed and recorded the commercial as I initially wanted, but to accommodate my new circumstances I improvised quite a bit and many of my shots were candid and natural. Despite the unstaged scenes, I made sure to vary my angles and shots and to fit every shot to the theme of the commercial. Most of the props were found in and around the immediate area, except the food which was ordered from a local fast-food chain.  My first scene was one where the main actor, the patient suffering from Crohn's disease, was in pain from her ailment. My actors ending up being my six closest friends, all female, which resulted in a ch...
