Research Genre: Action

Image
For my opening sequence, I've chosen to do action. I knew when I started this project I that I had to do this particular genre. The joy I get from watch action films is something I want to try to recreate for myself. The positive associations as well as the memories I have of action films make it something very personal. When I have to make something that's uniquely mine, I try to mimic what make me the happiest. For me, action movies are a display of your wildest dreams and most daring adventures. All the things you think you could never do because your not good enough, not brave enough or not skilled enough for is being done right in front of you. This genre is one where a protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of events that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, rescues and frantic chases. Its one of the most broad and well developed in terms of diversity and versatility. The satisfaction of viewers who get immersed in the story is r...

Genre Research: Mr. Right

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The characters attitudes in the face of danger was nonchalant and humours which I genuinely found entertaining. The main characters' relationship was shallow, but intense which I think could be interesting to include in my final task. I want to make the character in my opening sequence both funny and badass so that I can bring to life one of my favorite genres. I think the cheesiness of this film was overdone, but I do appreciate certain aspect of the slightly ridiculous humor that I think could be fun to include. The action scenes in Mr. Right weren't what I usually enjoy but the dynamic between the male and female lead during these scenes is something I hope to convey in my footage. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I though that there was some charming moments that made the film enjoyable to watch. It wasn't a high quality production but it was funny...

Genre Research: 6 Underground

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? This film has a lot of fight and chase scenes with dramatic editing and weaponry. The main characters were highly skilled and well trained, but still with in human limits. This is something my character will reflect as her abilities in strength, agility, etc are not super human. The humor of the characters was brutal and occasionally crude, but very entertaining and well orchestrated. I would like to reflect this type of dry joking into my opening sequence. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I enjoyed the high-tech, covert style of the characters. The fact that they faked their deaths and operated as skilled spies without rules or government control was super entertaining to me. The storyline had tons of edgy humour and intense violence. The visual were stunning and dynamic. There is never a dull moment and it was easy to regret looking away even for a moment. The...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
This website is used to research past opening sequences. I am looking to expand my knowledge of past precedent and international references for opening sequences. This site includes opening sequences from professionals, specifically listing studios, directors and films. You can also find amateur and student opening sequences. Even examples from other forms of media like video games and TV shows. Theres also a section from French films during the 1950s - 1980s, a legendary time and area for opening sequences. I've learned opening sequences should establish main characters and eventually serve as a version of the film's branding. Novelty, names, and faces should be brought by a film's opening sequence. I am using this website to find examples and explanations for past successes. I am also looking for inspiration in terms of design.

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
I am looking at this site to help determine what makes an opening sequence succesful. Measuring how interesting an opening sequence is and making it as effective as possible is a difficult task. This website uses examples from existing films and opening sequences to help break it down. It explores the biggest hits of every genre and what made their opening sequences so successful. This site allows you to explore very films, studios, and directors so you can read about their best opening sequences. I've discovered the key to a well-made opening sequence is suspense. You have to interest the viewer, but leave their curiosity unsatisfied. No matter the genre: humor, horror, action, romance, you need to attract them with a mystery that have to solve. Viewers should have questions after an opening sequence; Who killed them? Why did they break up? Why is she crying? What happened to their parents? This should all be done without spoiling the plot.

Genre Research: Venom

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? I've chosen to use the supernatural and combat elements of this film. The power the character of my film and the power of the character in Venom are widely different. The origin and ability of the character's powers don't match but, the supernatural element is certainly there. Both films also involve a childish but powerful character in the main storyline as well. The fighting in this film is also something I've chosen to use. My character will be using classic human weaponry and normal human strength and agility but will boast fight scenes as epic as the ones in Venom. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I enjoyed the power growth the characters had. I've chosen not to convey this in my opening sequences, nor would I if I were to film my pitch as a movie; however, I like the concept. The attempt at humourous dialogue was something I also enjoyed....

Genre Research: Romance & Comedy

Image
DRAMA: Common CAMS in the genre Some of the most used examples of CAMS in romance films are Establishing Shots, typically used to help viewers determine the setting of the scene. Hollywood, Paris, Greece, and New York are common settings with iconic monuments often used for establishing shots. Mid Shot is another good example. These shots work well in showing body langauge; telling us how the character fells without them having to speak. Closeups are also often used as they are usually a good shot to make the audience feel empathy towards the character. Common CLAMPS in the genre costumes in romance films tend to be fairly standard street wear as the characters are usually intended to be easy to relate to. Makeup is also nondescript. Actors tend to be good looking and charming individuals with natural props that exist in daily life. Scenes will usually be in familiar locations with natural lighting. Common Editing in your genre An eyeline match is a good example of a common ed...

Genre Research: Horror

The task for this project was to chose a genre and research typical conventions of the filming of the genre. This included common lighting, angles, sounds, movement, and elements. I chose to research horror. I thought that horror would have a very strict and clear style as most horror films are recorded in a similar manner and follow the same general storyline. The distrion of the gener, as well as the long history behind it, made me intrested. Humans enjoy being afriad so much that they create scenes depicting horrrible brutatilry and terrible fears for amusement. It was an intresting concept and I thought that the process behind it would be intresting. What I've discovered it that they're is a lot of overlap in filming style in horror. The vast majority of movies in this genre use spefcifc lighting styles to convay the darker tone that most of the footage demands. Low-key lightening is one such example as it uses harsh light and dramatic shadows to get the creepy effec...

My Pitch

Image
Choosing a pitch was very difficult for me. Determining the basis of this project is something I struggled with as I worry over how it can convey my message as well as whether I am capable of creating content I can be proud. This step is the core of the entire project and I want to enjoy the process; however, I worry that I can't properly convey my pitch. This makes this step a personal challenge and I hope my decision was the right one. Sometimes I struggle with coming up with ideas, but for this project, my struggle was picking out of the ones I had. This project was different then anything I've done before so I had a lot of ideas about what I want it to be about. For a while I thought about choosing horror as the genre and even considered an apocalyptic theme. However, in the end, I went with a classic genre, and arguably my personal favorite, action. I thought action would be broad choice with many perspectives. I knew I wanted to include humor with the action because I...

Starting The Final Task

Image
My name is Vanessa S and I am a 10th grader at Fort Lauderdale High School in Flordia. I enjoy reading, volleyball, and have recently begun to enjoy puzzles. Over the past few months, which have been in quarantine due to COVID-19, I have been learning about media and the processes that go with it from a distance. I have discovered that the most difficult part of any project is the content. Determing how you start and where you go next isn't always easy. I hope this project will allow me to grow in that regard. For this project I will be working alone. This is for several reasons. Mainly do the the risk of group projects during a pandemic . My family and I would prefer to limit our interaction with others as much as possible and working with several other classmates is a luxury we cannot afford. I feel many of my classmates have the same concerns. COVID-19 has also made it difficult to become close friends with new classmates as interaction has been limited. As such, I am not we...
